Remittance Inflow Surpasses Rs. 2.12 Trillion in Nepal

Kathmandu, July 14 — Nepal has received more than Rs. 2.12 trillion in remittances during the first 11 months of the current fiscal year, according to the latest economic data. The figure highlights the continued importance of overseas employment as a major pillar of the country’s economy.

The strong inflow of remittances has contribut

ed significantly to Nepal’s foreign exchange reserves and helped support household spending across the country. Millions of Nepali families rely on money sent home by relatives working abroad for daily expenses, education, healthcare, and housing.

Experts say the growth in remittance earnings reflects the sustained demand for Nepali workers in international labor markets, particularly in Gulf nations, Malaysia, South Korea, and other destinations. The inflow has also provided stability to the country’s external sector at a time when imports remain high.

Economists note that remittances continue to play a crucial role in maintaining economic activity and supporting financial institutions. However, they also emphasize the need to channel remittance income into productive sectors such as agriculture, industry, tourism, and entrepreneurship to create long-term economic benefits.

Government officials have repeatedly stressed the importance of encouraging investment from migrant workers and their families to generate employment opportunities within Nepal. Policies aimed at promoting productive use of remittance earnings are expected to remain a key focus in the coming years.

With one month remaining in the fiscal year, analysts believe total remittance inflows could reach a new record high, further reinforcing the vital contribution of Nepali workers abroad to the national economy.
